This section covers information on the Geometry functions in V-Ray for Modo.



While V-Ray is primarily a rendering tool, it includes a few geometry-related features to aid in rendering. V-Ray also includes tools for modifying geometry or importing geometry from outside sources. It is expected that you will do the majority of your 3D modeling with native Modo tools, and will use these V-Ray tools mostly to alter existing Modo geometry or enhance an existing scene.

This section covers the different ways V-Ray can create and modify geometry objects in a scene.


V-Ray Geometry Objects

The following geometry objects can be created through V-Ray:

  • V-Ray Clipper – Creates a simple plane at render time that can be used to clip away parts of the scene without modifying the actual scene geometry.
  • V-Ray ProxyImports geometry from an external mesh, which only loads the full details at render time. The geometry is not present in the scene and does not take any resources.
  • V-Ray Volume Grid – Creates a volumetric effect that works with grid-based cache formats. It reads its data from an input file that supports grid-based volume representation.


Geometry Properties

V-Ray can be used with the following geometry properties:

  • Render Curves – Renders curves within Modo as solid objects, and provides a great degree of control over the appearance of the curve in the rendering. It can be used with the Fur Material to make fur strands appear smoother


Standalone Tools and Utilities

The following standalone geometry tools come packaged with V-Ray for Modo.

  • Convert Poly to V-Ray Proxy - A command-line tool that converts a variety of mesh files into .vrmesh format for V-Ray Proxy Objects.
  • V-Ray Mesh Viewer - Allows the user to preview static and animated V-Ray mesh (.vrmesh) and alembic files.
