In V-Ray 5, we have completely overhauled the V-Ray Proxy with entirely new functionality that makes it more powerful than ever. The V-Ray Proxy loads geometry from file on disk at render time only, allowing you to render scenes with many millions of faces, more than Maya itself can handle, since the geometry is not present in the scene and does not use up resources.
