If you add a new version of a job you have already submitted, its upload will be much quicker than the initial upload. Chaos Cloud compares every new job to the existing ones, and if there is a match the client app will upload only the changes. This is useful when you make a new iteration of an existing scene and is why it 's is recommended to keep your jobs in Chaos Cloud while you are still working on them.

Submitting Render Jobs

V-Ray for Maya provides in-built integration with Chaos Cloud, allowing you to submit render jobs to the cloud directly from Maya, using the dedicated Render in Chaos Cloud button. The button is located on the V-Ray Shelf and can also be found in the V-Ray Menu.

Clicking on the  button will open the Submit to Chaos Cloud window.

Submit to Chaos Cloud

The Submit to Chaos Cloud window allows you to choose how to submit your scene to Chaos Cloud.

Two layer modes are available - Single Layer and Multiple Layers, giving you the option to Batch Render in Chaos Cloud.

Clicking on Export and Submit will export the scene and submit it to the cloud for rendering. You will be prompted to finalize some of the settings for the render job in a web browser the Chaos Cloud Client App before it starts rendering in Chaos Cloud.

In the case where one layer and one camera are present in the scene, no changes need to be made to this section.

Multiple Layers - Allows for one or multiple layers to be rendered simultaneously.

Select All Layers - When enabled, selects all layers in the scene to be submitted to Chaos Cloud.

Renderable Layers - Lists all the renderable layers in the scene. Allows for manual selection and exclusion of one or more layers from the render. If a layer from the scene is missing in this list, it needs to be made renderable.

The Upload only option is available only when submitting through the Chaos Cloud client app. Batch rendering produces a large number of jobs, which are remotely rendered simultaneously on up to 100 machines. This costs Cloud Credits and takes time. Enabling Upload only gives you an opportunity for extra inspection of the jobs, ensuring that no resources are wasted.

The output image types that you are able to download by rendering in Chaos Cloud are JPG and the file type you have specified in the settings of your scene. These settings are customized in the 3D application you use for designing your scene. If you don’t specify anything in the 3D application, Chaos Cloud generates an EXR image beside the JPG one.

When submitting a render job requesting TIFF and/or TGA images as a result, the results might be unexpected as not all TIFF and TGA settings are exported to Chaos Cloud.

Note that the supported output image formats by Chaos Cloud regardless of the host application are the following: *.png, *.bmp, *.tga, *.hdr, *.sgi, *.rgb, *.rgba, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.exr, *.pic, *.tif, *.tiff and *.vrimg.

The cost for rendering a job can be limited by using the Job Credit Limit setting. For more information, see the Credit Limit section.

When ready, click the Submit button. When you are presented with the following message your render job is submitted successfully and it will start rendering in the cloud.

Render Engine Overrides
50%

Single Layer renders only the visible layer but can batch render multiple cameras from the scene.

Select Project- Lets you select from the list of projects in your Cloud account. The + Create New option creates a new project on the spot.

Name - The name of the scene. Can be renamed before starting the render.

Resolution (px) - A dropdown menu that allows for a different standard resolution to be set to the scene: Draft 800 x 450; HD 1280 x 720; FHD 1920 x 1080; 4K 3840 x 2160; 8K 7680 x 4320.

Width (px) - Allows for manual editing of the width of the scene.

Height (px) - Allows for manual editing of the height of the scene.

Aspect ratio - This dropdown menu offers a series of standard aspect ratios for the scene: Widescreen 16:9; Square 1:1; Picture 4:3 (default); Landscape 5:4; Portrait 4:5.

Cameras - This option shows all renderable cameras in the scene that were exported from Maya. It gives you an opportunity to check and change which camera(s) to render, if needed. This option is available only when there are more than one renderable cameras in the scene.

All - Selects all cameras.
Clear - Clears all cameras from the render list.

Output naming - Determines the way of naming the rendered scene. Only the <name> and <####> values can be changed. The arrows adjust the order of the components.

<name> - Specifies the main name of the output.
<camera> - Specifies the name of the camera(s) being rendered
<render element> - Specifies the position of the render element(s) in the naming convention, if there are such
<####> - Specifies the padding of the frame's number. This option is only available for animated jobs.
Using the arrows, you can move the position of each name component to customize the output name(s).

Output Type - Displays the type of output - either an image or animation. This option is only editable in Maya.

Render mode - Displays the rendering mode to be used by Chaos Cloud. This option is only editable in Maya.

Output format - Displays the format of the rendered files. This option is only editable in Maya.

Frames Range - This option controls which of the already exported frames are rendered. Frame ranges are hyphenated and without spaces between them. They are separated with commas. Multiple frame ranges, as well as single frames, can be rendered from the same animation. For example, entering 1-7,9,12-25 exports only the frames from 1 to 7, frame 9 and the frames from 12 to 25. This option is only available for animated jobs.

Frame step - Allows the spacing between rendered frames to be edited. This option is only available for animated jobs.

CUDA CPU override - When enabled, overrides the render engine to render with CUDA on CPU only. This option is only available when rendering with V-Ray GPU.

Upload only - When enabled, the job is only uploaded to Chaos Cloud and remains paused until it is manually resumed.

When rendering a V-Ray GPU job the CUDA CPU Override option allows you to override the render engine to render with CUDA on CPU only. This can be useful when:

  • there is no GPU hardware available to render the V-Ray GPU job

  • the 16 GB of memory, available on the GPU hardware that Chaos Cloud uses, are not enough for the job to render

When Chaos Cloud detects that there is no GPU hardware available, it shows a warning which asks you whether you want to wait for a GPU hardware and gives you an option to use another command which:

  • Stops the rendering of the current job

  • Clones the current job and sets

the CUDA
  • the CUDA CPU Override

option to
  •  option to ON

so
  •  so the job renders only on CPU

When the job is rendered, you can see whether it is a V-Ray GPU or a V-Ray job in the Job Details. If it is a V-Ray GPU job, Chaos Cloud shows whether it has rendered only on CPU.
