This page provides information about the Ambient Settings rollout of Vantage's Environment tab.
Overview
The Ambient Settings rollout provides controls for configuring the overall ambient lighting in your scene, helping to define the mood and base light levels without relying on direct light sources.
The Ambient Settings rollout is located under the Environment tab in the right-hand side panel.
Settings
Ambient light color – Specifies a color for the ambient light. See the Ambient Light Color example below.
Ambient light intensity – Specifies a multiplier for the ambient light intensity. See the Ambient Light Intensity example below.
Ambient occlusion – Enables the rendering of global ambient shadows. See the Ambient Occlusion example below.
Occluded color – Specifies the color to be returned for occluded areas. See the Ambient Occlusion Colors and Radius example below.
Unoccluded color – Specifies the color to be returned for unoccluded areas. See the Ambient Occlusion Colors and Radius example below.
Radius – Determines the amount of area (in scene units) where ambient shadows are produced. See the Ambient Occlusion Colors and Radius example below.
Distribution – Forces the rays to gather closer to the surface normal. The effect is that the shadow area is being narrowed closer to the contact edges. See the Distribution example below.
Invert – When enabled, swaps the colors for the occluded and unoccluded areas. See the Inverted example below.
Double sided – Enables tracing of rays for both the front and back face of a surface.
Examples
The following examples demonstrate the effect that individual ambient parameters have on the scene. Click on any image to view it at a higher resolution.
Ambient Light Color
This example shows the effect of the Ambient light color parameter. Ambient occlusion is on.
Ambient Light Intensity
This example shows the effect of the Ambient light intensity parameter. Ambient occlusion is on.
Ambient Occlusion
This example shows the effect of the Ambient occlusion parameter.
Invert
This example shows the effect of the Invert parameter.
Ambient Occlusion Colors and Radius
This example shows the effect of the Occluded and Unoccluded colors as well as the Radius parameters.
Distribution
This example shows the effect of the Distribution parameters. Radius is set to 15. Occluded color is red, unoccluded color is white.
