This page outlines the product setup for using floating licenses in a local network.

What are Floating Licenses

Floating Licenses can be shared between multiple users on a first-come, first-served basis and don’t need to be assigned to an individual user.

They are are ideal for creating a pool of licenses that can be used by multiple users, who do not need to have dedicated access to our products.

Sharing can be done in one of two ways:

  • Cloud-Based Floating Licensing (recommended): The administrator shares a pool of Floating licenses with the Organization's Users, and when they log in with their Chaos accounts, they can use the floating licenses through the cloud from any location. See the Cloud-Based Floating Licensing page for more details.
  • Remote Licensing: The administrator installs the Chaos License Server on a centrally accessible machine within a local network. The users will need to configure their Chaos product to connect to this centralized network location to access a license. Read below for details on this setup.

Floating Licensing Setup for a Local Network

  • When setting up floating licenses in a local network, the Chaos License Server needs to be installed on a centrally accessible machine in the network.
  • The License Server needs to be authenticated with a Chaos account that holds the floating license pool. This is usually the Administrator's account.
  • The Administrator shares the IP address of the machine where the Chaos License Server is installed
  • Users configure their Chaos products to connect to the Chaos License Server on the local network.

  • Ask your license holder for their machine's IP address.
  • Download your Chaos product(s) and run the installer. After accepting the End User License Agreement, select the Advanced installation option.
