This page explains how you can view licenses available on your device by accessing the Chaos License Server interface.

Overview

The Chaos License Server's interface is accessible in a web browser. Here, you can check the availability of your licenses, see the online licensing status, or borrow licenses for offline use. There are a few convenient ways to open the interface.

Accessing the Chaos License Server Interface

Accessing the License Server Interface may differ based on whether you are using the License Server locally on the same machine where you run Chaos products, or remotely on another machine that serves floating licenses in your local network.

Local

When the Chaos License Server is installed and running on the same machine from which you're trying to access the interface, you can do one of the following:

  • Alternatively, you can manage the license server through your system:
    • For Windows, you can use the Start Menu shortcuts, located in the Start Menu > All Apps > Chaos > Manage Chaos License Server. This redirects you to the License Server Interface page.

    • For Linux, run the vrlctl executable in a Terminal with the browser command. By default, it is located at /usr/Chaos/VRLService/. Example: /usr/Chaos/VRLService/vrlctl browser.

    • For macOS, run the vrlctl executable in a Terminal with the browser command. By default, it is located at /Applications/Chaos/VRLService/. Example: /usr/Chaos/VRLService/vrlctl browser..

Remote

If you wish to access a remote license server's Interface, you can type the_server_IP:30304 in a web browser. For example, if your server IP is 10.0.0.100, then you need to type 10.0.0.100:30304 into your browser. This is because the License Server is not hosted on your machine, and you need to specify the IP address where the browser needs to look for the active Chaos License.

Checking License Availability

Within the Chaos License Server Interface, you can browse all of your Chaos licenses and check their availability. To do so, click on the license page of any of the products you have a license for, then select the specific product you want to expand.

The License Type depends on the type of product you have acquired - Render Nodes have a Render License type, and host app plugins have an Interface License type. Interface licenses are used when a person is working with the hots application. Render licenses are used only when rendering. For Enscape, the Interface license is the only license type; there are no Render licenses for Enscape.

You can filter through Online, Offline, and Dongle licenses that are Available or In Use for the selected product using the dedicated buttons at the top of the expandable menu. Once a license is in use, you will see a flashing red dot next to it when you expand the product's menu.

You can see when a license expires and how long you have left before you need to renew it. Once one of your licenses is close to expiration, you also receive a reminder at the top of the interface. If you have auto-renewal enabled, this message shows the current subscription term and there is no further action needed.

Viewing License Availability Online

If a license is not visible in your license server, this can be for one of several reasons:

  • Named License is not assigned to you
  • Floating License is in use by another user
  • You are accessing a shared floating license pool in a Cloud-based Licensing deployment
  • License is borrowed for offline use on another license server
  • Your subscription has expired

In all these cases, you can see the status of licenses in the My Chaos Portal, under the Licensing tab.
