Overview

V-Ray for Cinema 4D offers two types of materials - the classic materials and the node materials (available for Cinema 4D versions 21.1 and later only).

These materials are quite versatile, and each can be used in a number of ways to achieve a needed look - from simulating simple surface properties like plastics and metals to complex uses such as translucent objects, subsurface materials such as skin, and even light-emitting objects.

For more details on each material, please see their dedicated pages.

Double-click to Create Materials

V-Ray supports creating V-Ray materials by double-clicking in the Material Manager

  • For Cinema 4D 2023 and later, in the Render Settings, you need to set the Render Engine to V-Ray. By default, the Material Manager automatically detects the render engine and creates the corresponding material. Double-clicking creates a V-Ray Material Node.
    • To create a Classic V-Ray Material using this method, go to Edit > Preferences... > Material and set the Default Material to V-Ray Material.

  • For Cinema 4D versions prior to 2023, go to Edit > Preferences... > Material and set the Default Material to V-Ray Material. This enables the Material Manager to create a Classic V-Ray Material on each double-click, regardless of the render engine.
    • To create a V-Ray Node Material this way, go to Edit > Preferences... > Material and set the Default Material to Node. Then, in the Render Settings, set the Renderer to V-Ray. Now, double-clicking creates a V-Ray Node Material.
