This page gives information on how to import 3D models from Chaos Cosmos Browser in Revit.
Overview
Chaos Cosmos provides a vast library of ready to use 3D models divided in several categories.
Usage
Hover over an asset and download it by clicking on the blue icon at the upper-right corner. Another way to download an asset is to click on it. This reveals additional information and a blue download button. You can see the category/space/color of the asset and other additional information.
Once the download is complete, a pop-up window states that the asset is downloaded successfully. Use the Import button to bring the asset into the host platform. This enables the component placement mode in Revit and allows placement of multiple asset instances anywhere in the model.
Upon placement, the Cosmos asset becomes a native Revit family, and you can move, rotate and copy it.
Note that downloaded assets can be reused across different host platforms. They are saved locally at the following directory: C:\Users\[User]\Documents\Chaos Cosmos\Packages.
Placement
Cosmos objects appear as native Revit families containing a lightweight geometric representation of the object. Depending on the object type itself, those families are either host-based or freestanding, and they also comply with Revit's family categorization.
Modifications
In V-Ray, the Cosmos objects appear under the ||Appearance Manager|| > Families tab > Cosmos subtab.
Scale – Scales the Cosmos asset. The scaling does not affect the viewport representation and is visible only at render time.
Rotation – Rotates the Cosmos asset around its vertical axis.
Randomize/Seed – Defines scale and rotation range (min/max) for the selected items to be randomized. Use the Refresh ( ) button on the right to choose between random combinations. Use the Navigation history arrows ( ) to switch back and forth between random combinations.
Similar to proxies workflow, the replacement of native Revit families with Cosmos objects is supported. For more information, refer to the Families tab page.
Missing 3D Models
When Chaos Cosmos assets are missing and need to be downloaded, the Appearance Manager toolbar icon appears with a warning dot indicator.
The same indicator appears on the Families tab and in the Search field, when opening the Appearance Manager. When you click on the
indicator in the Search field, it filters and displays only the missing assets that need to be downloaded. In such case, the regular filter and search cannot be used and are disabled. The
download button starts downloading the missing asset. It works on both single and multiple selection. When downloading is triggered, a progress bar and percentage appear next to each item. Some assets might be updated within the Cosmos browser itself. In such case, they appear with an "update" tag. To use their most recent version, you need to download and re-import them.
If your Revit model already contains a previous version of an asset, on a newer version import, the corresponding Revit family is reloaded. Any V-Ray changes made to the previous version, such as material replacements, remain and are inherited by the new version.
