This page provides information about the Curve Scattering rollout of Chaos Scatter in Maya.

Curve Scattering Parameters

The options in this menu are active when the scattering mode is set to 1D - On Curves.

Spacing – Determines the spacing between instances in scene units. See the Spacing example below for more information.

Jitter – Randomly jitters instances along the curve. Each instance has Spacing applied on both sides, except the instances at the end of the curve. The Jitter value is divided between those two Spacings. To allow instances to jitter in all their Spacing distance, the Jitter needs to be set to 2. See the Jitter example below for more information.

Offset – Determines how much the instances are offset in one direction of the curve. When set to 1, all instances replace the one after them, as the offset equals the whole value of the Spacing. See the Offset example below for more information.

Follow Curve – Determines how scattered instances are oriented along the curve. Assigning a value of 1 makes instances follow the curve and are oriented along the local tangent direction. See the Follow curve example below for more information.

Examples

Example: Spacing

This example shows how the Spacing parameter's value affects the distance between the instances. Note that the scene units in this scene are centimeters.

Spacing = 500

Spacing = 750

Spacing = 1000

Spacing = 2000

Example: Jitter

In this example, the Spacing is a constant value set to 750 cm and the Instance Count Limit is set to 20. The Jitter randomly distributes the instances.

Jitter = 0

Jitter = 0.25

Jitter = 0.5

Jitter = 1

Jitter = 2

Example: Offset

When set to 1, each instance takes the place of the one before it. Here, Jitter is set to 0.25 and Instance Count Limit is set to 20.

Offset = 0.25

Offset = 0.5

Offset = 1

Offset = 2.5

Offset = 5

Example: Follow Curve

For this example the Instance Count Limit is 20, the Rotation is set on the Z-axis, Jitter is set to 0.25. The curve according to which the cars align is visible in the render.

Follow Curve = 0

Follow Curve = 0.25

Follow Curve = 0.5

Follow Curve = 0.75

Follow Curve = 1
